Clay Hutson is from Nashville, Tennessee and earned a bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University in Theater Design and a business administration master’s degree from Stephen M. Ross School of Business. He has worked as sound engineer to project manager under several different live music industry companies. Some well known artists he has worked with include; Guns N’ Roses, Kelly Clarkson, Pink, OneRepublic, Lady Gaga, and Garbage to name a few.
Clay Hutson created his own production management company after one of the companies he was working for hit the recession. He knew he had all the skill sets needed in order to be able to successfully carry out a business such as his. With his touring experience and various positions in the music industry, he was ready to be an entrepreneur.
In order to carry out a successful tour or event, Clay Hutson takes every step necessary to maximize productivity. For any show he has going on, he wakes up early and gets to the venue before anyone else to review the schedule for the day and make sure everything is going as planned. Planning a schedule early on allows more room for creativity and also to give tasks to the right people of the crew based on their weaknesses and strengths. For Clay Hutson, good communication and organization allows no room for error and for a productive show.
One piece of advice that Clay Hutson would give to other individuals who want to go down the same path as his in the music industry is to be honest with yourself. By being honest with yourself, you can assess a problem or situation with objectivity, instead of seeing it how you would like it to be. In the long term, you will not be disappointed with the outcome and would be better for you overall. An example of this is stepping away from a big project that seems like it would be good for your career, but having to step away because of the negativity associated with it. If something doesn’t match up with your values, then you are better off stepping away from the project.
Mellow tunes such as Closer and Don’t Let Me Down are quintessential of great artistry, and the Chainsmokers are the among the world’s greats. The EDM duo comprised of Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart is dancing in global fame, with their singles such as Roses and Don’t Let Me Down becoming international hits.
While Alex and Andrew are exceptionally talented producers who have mastered the art of crafting rhythmic beats, it is their ability to work for a hand in glove that has been the better part of their global success. It is incredible how the two manage to stay versatile, and make music that resonates to their million plus audience all over the world, and, as Alex Pall says, this is emblematic of the effort they put it in their music.
At the time Pall and Andrew paired up, EDM was all about beats with a little human touch, which if present, was from collaboration from other vocalists. The Chainsmokers, however, introduced a new style in the EDM genre, as Taggart would sing in their songs.
As Alex Pall says, they had to do it better and differently to stand out in a competitive industry that most Dj’s were plying the same trade. Alex and Andrew were both EDM enthusiasts with Pall playing gigs around New York, while Taggart was an EDM darling at college in his hometown, Maine where he produced several beats and put them up on SoundCloud. Taggart would later switch to New York and team up with Alex Pall, who already had a thing going in the city, and was DJing in several events.
According to Alex Pall, their pairing was fruitful from the word go, as they both, fundamentally, shared the same goals of becoming better artists, and producing more quality music. Consequently, the Chainsmokers worked around the clock in Pall’s apartment and produced many hits, which they still do today.

The Chainsmokers have worked with other famous artists such as Coldplay, Priyanka Chopra, Daya, and Halsey. The EDM duo performs regularly at XS Las Vegas and Encore Beach Club.
Alex Pall was ready to answer any and all questions about him, The Chainsmokers, and their new track Closer. He reveals that he met Andrew Taggart through their current manager. He had already been working with the manager to help boost his DJing hobby in New York City. The manager introduced the two because he thought that they would work well together, and they both had the same kind of goals. After meeting, the two immediately started working.
Taggart moved from Maine to the city, and Alex Pall quit his job. They committed to spending all day grinding out music, and working together. This was four years ago, and now they are famous, award winning musicians. Right from when they started working together, they knew it would work out. They both had similar taste and brought different things to the table. Once they talked about their ambitions, and realized they both had the drive to achieve, and both really badly wanted to make it work, they knew that they were going to work great together.
They got together every day from 9AM to 7PM and just made music together, while also working on creating a great artistic identity to play off of. The most unique part of their sound though, comes with their newest track. For being a DJ duo in the electronic genre, it is unusual to hear the actual artist singing on their track, and yet that is exactly what Taggart did on Closer.
Pall also spoke about the audience they play towards and the people that connect with their music. Thanks to the internet age, and apps like Instagram, it’s very clear what kind of people love The Chainsmokers’ music. Their music is generally listened to by 16 to 25 year olds, but it does transcend ages, countries, genders, and cultures. There are people in the Philippines listening to them, and six year olds singing their music. For Pall, it is really just exciting to find that so many other people enjoy the music, and find an emotional connection to it, because that’s why they create it.
